The short answer

Ultra Pro One-Touch at the band your card actually is

Ultra Pro defined this category and still owns it. The product decision is not which brand but which thickness: 35pt for standard cards, 55pt and 75pt for inserts and relics, 100pt and up for patch stock. Buy them for cards you intend to look at, not for cards you intend to mail.

A magnetic one-touch holder costs many times what a toploader costs, and the honest case for it is narrow but real: it is the only common raw-card holder that both opens without stressing the card and carries a manufacturer UV claim. For a card going on a shelf, that combination is worth paying for. For a card going into a mailer, it is not.

What you are actually paying for

  • UV-blocking additives. Ultra Pro states these in its product information. Light is what fades a card on display, and a plain toploader makes no such claim.
  • A magnetic closure. The holder opens and closes cleanly, so a card that gets taken out and put back repeatedly is not being dragged against plastic each time.
  • Non-PVC, acid-free construction. The floor for any holder, and worth confirming at this price.
  • It stands up. A one-touch is self-supporting on a shelf, which a toploader is not.

Thickness bands matter more here than anywhere

Ultra Pro publishes clear bands: 35pt cases for cards up to 35pt, 55pt for 36pt to 55pt, 75pt for 56pt to 75pt, and so on through 130pt and 180pt. A card in a band too small does not close properly. A card in a band too large rattles behind the magnets. Both are avoidable with one look at the card thickness points chart.

The magnet problem nobody mentions

Magnets attract anything ferrous nearby. In a storage box full of one-touch holders that is harmless; near loose metal, paper clips, or anything magnetized it is not. Keep magnetic holders away from anything you would not want stuck to them, and do not stack them against electronics.

One-touch or screwdown

A screwdown is more secure and vastly less convenient: nothing moves, and you need a screwdriver to see the card. For a card going into a safe or traveling a long way, that trade is correct. For a card on a shelf, a one-touch is the better object — best screwdown holders covers the other side.

Common questions

What size one-touch do I need?
Match the band to the card: 35pt for standard cards, 55pt for 36pt to 55pt, 75pt for 56pt to 75pt, 100pt and 130pt for thick patch stock, 180pt for booklets.
Do one-touch holders really block UV?
Ultra Pro states UV-blocking additives in its product information. That is a manufacturer claim rather than a measured figure, and it is more than a plain toploader offers. Keep displays out of direct sun regardless.
Can I grade a card in a one-touch holder?
No. Submissions want a clear sleeve inside a semi-rigid holder. A magnetic holder has to be opened at intake.
Are magnetic holders safe for cards long term?
The holders themselves are acid-free and non-PVC, so yes for the card. Keep them away from loose ferrous objects and out of direct sunlight.
Do I still need a penny sleeve inside a one-touch?
Opinion divides here. A sleeve adds thickness, so if you sleeve, confirm the card still seats properly in its band. Many collectors display unsleeved in a one-touch precisely because the holder does not drag on the card.
