The short answer
PSA for resale, CGC for bulk economics, SGC for vintage, BGS for sub-grades
There is no single best grader, and anyone telling you otherwise is ignoring the card in your hand. PSA commands the strongest resale premium and the longest queue. CGC has consistently had the cheapest active bulk tier. SGC's black-core slab is the vintage collector's preference. BGS is the one that gives you sub-grades. Match the grader to the card and the exit you have in mind.
Choosing a grader is a resale decision wearing a quality costume. All four of the majors grade competently. What differs is what the market pays for their slab, what they charge, how long they take, and whether the slab itself suits the card.
PSA — the resale premium, and the queue
PSA slabs reliably sell for more than equivalent grades from other companies, and that premium is the entire reason most submitters put up with the rest. The rest, as of 2026, has been a backlog measured in millions of cards and repeated changes to the entry tiers. PSA paused new submissions on its four Value service levels on 2 June 2026 while it cleared that backlog, and introduced a Standard tier at $59.99 with a published estimate of 90 to 100 business days on 14 September 2026, as reported by trade coverage of PSA's pricing.
Send to PSA when the card is good enough that the resale premium outweighs the fee and the wait. Full detail on PSA grading cost and PSA turnaround times.
CGC — the bulk economics
CGC has consistently had the lowest active entry price among the majors through 2026, with a bulk tier reported at around $17 per card against a 25-card minimum and a turnaround of roughly 90 business days. For a collection of mid-value cards where the PSA premium would not cover the difference in fees, that gap decides the question on its own. See PSA vs CGC.
SGC — vintage, and the slab people actually like
SGC's black-core slab presents vintage cards better than anything else on the market, and that is not purely aesthetic — the contrast makes edges and corners read cleanly. SGC's pricing moved sharply in 2026, with Standard grading reported at $50 per card for cards up to $1,500 declared value after a change on 2 September 2026. The vintage preference persists regardless. See PSA vs SGC.
BGS — sub-grades
BGS is the grader that tells you why. Sub-grades for centering, corners, edges and surface turn a single number into a diagnosis, which is genuinely useful if you are learning to assess cards or buying raw to grade. BGS cases are also the thickest of the four, which matters for display and storage fit. See PSA vs BGS.

1. Needed whichever grader you choose
Cardboard Gold Card Saver 1
Cardboard Gold · Standard modern cards going to PSA
The semi-rigid holder PSA's own shipping guide points you toward, at the size its instructions name. If you submit standard-thickness modern cards, this is the default and the decision is made.
Why it takes this slot: Every major grader asks for a sleeved card in a semi-rigid holder. The holder requirement does not change with the company.
- Holder size
- 3 5/16" x 4 7/8"
- Card thickness
- Standard cards up to roughly 20pt
- Material
- Acid-free, PVC-free rigid vinyl
- Common pack sizes
- 50, 100 and 200 count
What it does well
- Matches the semi-rigid dimensions PSA's shipping guide specifies
- Consistent fit from pack to pack, which matters when you are loading 200 cards
- Thin enough to band and ship in bulk without a bulky box
Where it falls short
- A snug fit — a thick or already-curved card needs care going in
- Priced above generic semi-rigids precisely because it is the submission standard

2. Pre-screen before any submission
Luxiv Card Grading Centering Tool Kit
Luxiv · Pre-screening centering before you pay a fee
An acrylic centering guide plus a 30x magnifier and cloths. Centering is the single most common reason a card misses a 10, and this is the cheapest way to find that out before you pay for grading.
Why it takes this slot: Centering tolerance differs by grader, but a card that is badly off-center fails at all of them. Check first.
- Contents
- Acrylic centering guide, 30x magnifier, two microfiber cloths
- Material
- Transparent acrylic
- Works with
- PSA, BGS and CGC centering standards
What it does well
- Catches an off-center card before a submission fee is spent on it
- The magnifier doubles as your surface and edge check
- Costs a fraction of one grading fee
Where it falls short
- Measuring by eye on a gauge is less precise than a scan-based measurement
- Does nothing for surface or edge wear on its own

3. Clear sleeves, every time
Ultra Pro Platinum Soft Card Sleeves
Ultra Pro · The default penny sleeve
Clear, acid-free, consistently cut, and sold everywhere in 100-count packs. It is the sleeve every other sleeve gets compared to, and the one PSA's guidance effectively asks for: clear, not opaque.
Why it takes this slot: Clear penny sleeves are the universal first layer, and opaque ones cause intake delays wherever you send them.
- Size
- Standard 2 5/8" x 3 5/8" trading card
- Material
- Acid-free, PVC-free polypropylene
- Pack size
- 100 count, sold in multipacks
- Clarity
- Clear — grading-submission appropriate
What it does well
- Clear sleeve, which is what grading submissions require
- Consistent cut, so cards do not catch going in
- Cheap enough to sleeve a whole box without thinking about it
Where it falls short
- Thin by design — a sleeve is not protection on its own
- Static cling makes single-handed loading fiddly

The decision in one paragraph
If the card is genuinely valuable and you intend to sell, send it to PSA and accept the wait. If you have twenty mid-value cards and the question is whether grading them makes economic sense at all, the cheapest active bulk tier is doing the deciding, and that has been CGC. If the card is pre-1980, SGC. If you want to know exactly where the card lost points, BGS. Start from the card, not the brand.
