The short answer
All standard toploaders are 3" x 4". Only the thickness changes.
The footprint is constant, which is why they stack and why team bags and boxes are sized the way they are. The point number is the maximum card thickness, and buying a sensible mix means a lot of 35pt and progressively fewer of everything above it.
Toploader sizing confuses people because the number on the pack describes depth, not the outside of the holder. Every standard toploader is the same 3" by 4" footprint — the point value tells you how thick a card it will take.
| Size | Card thickness band | What fits |
|---|---|---|
| 35pt | Up to 35pt | A standard card in a penny sleeve — the one to stock |
| 55pt | 36pt to 55pt | Jersey inserts, sleeved vintage |
| 75pt | 56pt to 75pt | Single-patch relics |
| 100pt | 76pt to 100pt | Thick patch cards |
| 130pt | 101pt to 130pt | Jumbo patch cards |
| 180pt | 131pt to 180pt | Booklets — magnetics and screwdowns take over here |
Bands as published by the major manufacturers. Footprint is a constant 3 inches by 4 inches across all of them.
Why the constant footprint matters
Because everything downstream is built around it. Storage boxes are sized in standard-card widths, resealable bags for toploaders are cut to the 3" by 4" outline, and a shelf of loaded holders stacks squarely regardless of the thicknesses inside. Change the footprint and all of that stops working, which is why nobody does.
A sensible stocking plan
- 35pt — by the hundred. This is the working size and you will always want more.
- 55pt — one box. Enough for the inserts a season produces.
- 75pt — a handful. Bought when a relic arrives, not before.
- 100pt and 130pt — per card. Specialist purchases for specific cards.
- 180pt and above — not as toploaders. Use magnetics or screwdowns.

1. Stock deep
Ultra Pro 3x4 Regular Toploaders (35pt)
Ultra Pro · Standard modern cards
The toploader the whole hobby defaults to. Clear, reliably sized, PVC-free, and available in every quantity from a 25-count pack to a case.
Why it takes this slot: Covers a sleeved standard card, which is most of any collection.
- Size
- 3" x 4"
- Card thickness
- Up to 35pt
- Material
- PVC-free rigid plastic
- Common pack sizes
- 25, 100 and 200 count
What it does well
- Fits a sleeved standard card correctly, which is the whole job
- Available everywhere, so you never change brands mid-collection
- Cheapest reliable protection for a card you are shipping or trading
Where it falls short
- Not accepted for grading submissions — PSA's guide says not to use toploaders
- Rigid plastic scuffs, so they are not a long-term display answer

2. Stock a box
Ultra Pro 3x4 Toploaders (55pt)
Ultra Pro · Jersey inserts and sleeved vintage
The first step up from 35pt. Use it for jersey inserts and for vintage cards that sit in a thicker sleeve, where a 35pt holder binds.
Why it takes this slot: Jersey inserts and sleeved vintage land here.
- Card thickness
- 36pt to 55pt
- Size
- 3" x 4"
- Material
- PVC-free rigid plastic
What it does well
- Covers the thickness band most collections hit second
- Same shelf footprint as 35pt
Where it falls short
- A standard card rattles inside it
- Easy to buy the wrong band — measure first

3. Stock deep, cheaper
BCW 3x4 Toploaders (35pt)
BCW · Bulk shipping at the lowest unit cost
BCW undercuts Ultra Pro slightly in bulk, and for cards going into mailers rather than onto a shelf that is the only difference that matters.
Why it takes this slot: The same job at a lower unit cost in case quantities.
- Size
- 3" x 4"
- Card thickness
- Up to 35pt
- Material
- PVC-free rigid plastic
- Common pack sizes
- 25, 100 and case quantities
What it does well
- Typically the cheapest per unit at case quantity
- Some collectors prefer the slightly thicker plastic
Where it falls short
- Also not accepted for grading submissions
- Clarity and fit are very close to Ultra Pro — do not expect a visible upgrade

4. Buy per card
Ultra Pro 3x4 Thick Toploaders (130pt)
Ultra Pro · Jumbo patch and booklet-thickness cards
The top of the common toploader range. If a card needs more than this you are into screwdowns and thick magnetics, not toploaders.
Why it takes this slot: The top of the common range. There is no reason to hold these as stock.
- Card thickness
- 101pt to 130pt
- Size
- 3" x 4"
- Material
- PVC-free rigid plastic
What it does well
- Handles jumbo patch stock most holders refuse
- Pairs with thick sleeves
Where it falls short
- Very bulky per card
- Rarely needed in quantity

Related formats with different sizing
Magnetic one-touch holders use the same point bands but a different outer size, so they do not fit toploader bags or toploader-sized slots. Semi-rigid card savers are sized differently again — 3 5/16" by 4 7/8" for the standard holder, which is the size graders specify. Card saver sizes explained covers that family.
