The short answer

Turnaround is a published estimate, not a commitment, and it is what you are paying for

Each PSA service level carries an estimated turnaround in business days. Cheaper tiers have run into the 90-business-day range; the fastest run in single-digit days at many times the price. Plan from the estimate on the day you ship, add the shipping both ways, and never plan a sale around a date you do not control.

What the estimates meant in 2026

Trade coverage of PSA's September 2026 pricing described the Standard tier at an estimated 90 to 100 business days, Priority at 70 to 80, Express at 20 to 30, Super Express at 10 to 15, Premier at 7 to 10, and the Premium tiers at 5 to 7. The pattern is consistent: turnaround is the product, and you buy it.

Context matters for those numbers. PSA paused all four of its Value service levels on 2 June 2026 against a backlog reported in the millions of cards. A queue that size stretches every estimate in the system, which is why figures published before mid-2026 are not useful for planning now.

Reported estimates, September 2026
TierEstimated turnaroundRoughly, in calendar time
Standard90-100 business daysAbout 4 to 5 months
Priority70-80 business daysAbout 3.5 to 4 months
Express20-30 business daysAbout 1 to 1.5 months
Super Express10-15 business daysAbout 2 to 3 weeks
Premier7-10 business daysAbout 2 weeks
Premium5-7 business daysAbout 1 to 1.5 weeks

What actually makes a submission slow

  • The tier you paid for. This is the dominant factor by a wide margin.
  • Queue depth. A backlog stretches every tier simultaneously, as 2026 demonstrated.
  • Preparation problems. Opaque sleeves, toploaders, tape, sticky notes — anything that needs handling at intake adds time.
  • Form errors. A declared value above your tier's cap, or a form that does not match the stack, means your order gets set aside.
  • Seasonality. Submissions spike after major releases and around the end of the year.

1. Prepare it properly, once

Cardboard Gold Card Saver 1

Cardboard Gold · Standard modern cards going to PSA

CGNo product photo

The semi-rigid holder PSA's own shipping guide points you toward, at the size its instructions name. If you submit standard-thickness modern cards, this is the default and the decision is made.

Why it takes this slot: A submission returned or delayed for preparation problems restarts the clock. The semi-rigid at the right size is the cheapest way to avoid that.

Holder size
3 5/16" x 4 7/8"
Card thickness
Standard cards up to roughly 20pt
Material
Acid-free, PVC-free rigid vinyl
Common pack sizes
50, 100 and 200 count

What it does well

  • Matches the semi-rigid dimensions PSA's shipping guide specifies
  • Consistent fit from pack to pack, which matters when you are loading 200 cards
  • Thin enough to band and ship in bulk without a bulky box

Where it falls short

  • A snug fit — a thick or already-curved card needs care going in
  • Priced above generic semi-rigids precisely because it is the submission standard

2. For what comes back

BCW Graded Card Storage Box

BCW · Storing slabs you are not displaying

BNo product photo

A slotted cardboard box sized for slabs rather than raw cards. Most of a graded collection should live here, not on a wall.

Why it takes this slot: Slabs arrive in a shipment that needs somewhere to go. A slotted slab box is the sensible destination.

Capacity
Roughly 30 graded slabs per the manufacturer
Fits
PSA, BGS, SGC, CSG and HGA slabs, plus BCW 4-screw holders
Material
Corrugated cardboard with slots

What it does well

  • Slots stop slab-on-slab scuffing
  • Takes mixed grading companies and screwdowns together
  • The cheapest way to store slabs properly

Where it falls short

  • Cardboard offers no moisture or impact protection
  • Thicker BGS cases eat the stated capacity

3. Keep the order together beforehand

BCW Resealable Team Bags

BCW · Sealing a sleeved and held card

BNo product photo

The cheap step everybody skips. A resealable bag around a sleeved card in a holder keeps dust and humidity off it and keeps lots together in a box.

Why it takes this slot: Submissions take weeks to assemble. Bagging lots keeps the order intact while you wait to hit a minimum.

Format
Resealable polypropylene bag
Material
Acid-free, PVC-free
Pack size
100 count

What it does well

  • Pennies per card for a real dust and moisture barrier
  • Keeps a lot or a team set together without rubber bands
  • Resealable, so it survives repeated handling

Where it falls short

  • One more thing to open when you want the card
  • Does nothing about physical impact

Planning a submission around a queue

  1. Check the estimate for your tier on PSA's own site on the day you ship — not a figure from an article, including this one.
  2. Add shipping time in both directions, and allow for the fact that the clock starts at PSA's receiving, not at your post office.
  3. Never commit to selling a card by a date that depends on a grading estimate you do not control.
  4. Scan both sides of every card before it leaves — once it is slabbed, you cannot photograph it properly again.
  5. Have the storage ready for what comes back, because slabs returning to a house with nowhere to put them end up stacked loose.

If the wait is the obstacle rather than the fee, other graders have offered faster tiers at comparable prices — see best card grading company and PSA vs SGC.

Common questions

How long does PSA take to grade cards?
It depends entirely on the service level. September 2026 trade coverage reported ranges from 5 to 7 business days on the top tiers to 90 to 100 business days on Standard. Check PSA's current published estimate for your tier before shipping.
Does paying more actually make it faster?
Yes — turnaround is precisely what the higher tiers sell. The grading itself is identical; the queue position is what you are buying.
Why is my submission taking longer than the estimate?
Estimates are not guarantees, and queue depth moves them. Preparation problems at intake, a declared value above your tier cap, or a mismatch between your form and your stack will all add time.
Can I upgrade a submission after sending it?
Service-level changes after an order is in the system are at the grader's discretion and are not something to count on. Choose the tier you actually need before you ship.
