The short answer

Reported at $50 per card on Standard service, with no membership to buy first

SGC's Standard service is reported at $50 per card for cards up to a $1,500 declared value, with a reported turnaround of 40-plus business days and no paid membership requirement. Like every grader, SGC prices by declared value and speed rather than by quality of grading — the grading is the same at every tier. Pick the cheapest tier whose declared-value cap sits above your card's value.

How SGC prices a submission

The same way every grader does: each service level bundles a price per card, a maximum declared value the service will cover, and an estimated turnaround. The grading itself does not change between levels. What you are buying as you move up the list is speed and insured value, not a more careful look at your card.

So the correct tier is the cheapest one whose declared-value cap sits above what your card is worth. Declaring a value you cannot justify to buy a higher tier is pointless; declaring below your card's real value to save on the fee leaves you underinsured if something goes wrong in transit or in the building.

Expedited$150$3,5002-3 business days
Expedited$250$7,5002-3 business days
Expedited$500$20,0002-3 business days
Expedited$1,000$50,0002-3 business days
Expedited$2,000$100,0002-3 business days

Figures as reported by the secondary sources listed at the foot of this page. No membership is required for these service levels per the same reporting. Confirm against SGC's own price list before submitting.

The shape of that table is worth noting. The jump from Standard to Expedited is a jump in turnaround from weeks to days, and the price climbs steeply with the declared-value cap rather than with any change in service. Expedited at $2,000 per card is not a better grade — it is a $100,000 insurance ceiling and a three-day queue.

No membership, and why that matters

SGC's standard service is reported as requiring no paid membership. That is a genuine cost difference rather than a technicality, because PSA moved its cheapest tiers behind Collectors Club membership at a reported $149 a year, with a Premium tier reported at $199.

For a collector submitting five or ten cards a year, that membership can cost more than the grading. For someone submitting hundreds, it is noise. Work out your own annual card count before treating a per-card fee as the whole price of grading with any company.

The semi-rigid holder PSA's own shipping guide points you toward, at the size its instructions name. If you submit standard-thickness modern cards, this is the default and the decision is made.

Why it takes this slot: Every submission arrives in a semi-rigid. This is the one at the standard size, and it serves SGC and PSA identically.

Holder size
3 5/16" x 4 7/8"
Card thickness
Standard cards up to roughly 20pt
Material
Acid-free, PVC-free rigid vinyl
Common pack sizes
50, 100 and 200 count

What it does well

  • Matches the semi-rigid dimensions PSA's shipping guide specifies
  • Consistent fit from pack to pack, which matters when you are loading 200 cards
  • Thin enough to band and ship in bulk without a bulky box

Where it falls short

  • A snug fit — a thick or already-curved card needs care going in
  • Priced above generic semi-rigids precisely because it is the submission standard

An acrylic centering guide plus a 30x magnifier and cloths. Centering is the single most common reason a card misses a 10, and this is the cheapest way to find that out before you pay for grading.

Why it takes this slot: The best way to spend less on grading is to grade fewer cards. A gauge and a loupe catch the ones that were never going to come back well.

PSA, BGS and CGC centering standards

What it does well

  • Catches an off-center card before a submission fee is spent on it
  • The magnifier doubles as your surface and edge check
  • Costs a fraction of one grading fee

Where it falls short

  • Measuring by eye on a gauge is less precise than a scan-based measurement
  • Does nothing for surface or edge wear on its own

Clear, acid-free, consistently cut, and sold everywhere in 100-count packs. It is the sleeve every other sleeve gets compared to, and the one PSA's guidance effectively asks for: clear, not opaque.

Why it takes this slot: Clear sleeves inside the holder. Opaque sleeves cause delays, and a delay on a paid tier is an expensive kind of avoidable.

Clarity
Clear — grading-submission appropriate

What it does well

  • Clear sleeve, which is what grading submissions require
  • Consistent cut, so cards do not catch going in
  • Cheap enough to sleeve a whole box without thinking about it

Where it falls short

  • Thin by design — a sleeve is not protection on its own
  • Static cling makes single-handed loading fiddly

How this compares to PSA right now

The comparison is unusual in 2026 because PSA's cheap routes are not open. PSA paused new submissions on all four Value service levels — reported as Value Bulk at $24.99, Value at $32.99, Value Plus at $49.99 and Value Max at $64.99 — on 2 June 2026 while it cleared a backlog that reporting put at roughly 14 million cards.

PSA then introduced a Standard tier reported at $59.99 per card on 14 September 2026, with a reported turnaround of 90 to 100 business days and a maximum insured value of $1,000. Against that, SGC's reported $50 Standard at a $1,500 cap and 40-plus business days is cheaper, faster and covers more value.

Resale marketStrong, especially vintageBroadest of any grader

Both columns are secondary-source figures, dated and attributed at the foot of this page and of PSA grading cost.

The one column where PSA still wins decisively is the last. A PSA slab reaches the widest pool of buyers and, for many modern cards, carries a resale premium that can exceed the fee difference several times over. That is the real trade and it is argued out properly in PSA vs SGC.

The costs the per-card fee does not include

  • Shipping to the grader, insured for your declared value. Not optional on anything of consequence.
  • Return shipping, which is typically charged per submission and scales with declared value.
  • Supplies — sleeves, semi-rigids, banding, a rigid box and cardboard protectors. Small per card, real on a big submission.
  • Your own screening time, which is the cost most people ignore and the one that saves the most money.

Add those up before judging whether a $50 fee is worth it on a given card. The supplies side is covered in best SGC submission supplies, and the decision itself in is card grading worth it.

Common questions

How much does SGC grading cost per card?
SGC's Standard service is reported at $50 per card for cards up to a $1,500 declared value, and at $85 per card up to $3,500. Expedited service is reported from $150 per card. Confirm the current figures on SGC's own price list before submitting.
Does SGC have a bulk submission tier?
SGC's standard service is reported as available without a membership and at a flat per-card price rather than through a membership-gated bulk tier of the kind PSA operated. Check SGC's current submission terms directly for any volume arrangements.
Is SGC cheaper than PSA?
On reported entry-level figures, yes. SGC Standard is reported at $50 per card with a $1,500 cap and 40-plus business days, against PSA's Standard tier reported at $59.99 with a $1,000 cap and 90 to 100 business days. PSA's slab still commands the broader resale market.
How long does SGC take to grade cards?
SGC's Standard service reports a turnaround of 40-plus business days, with Expedited service reported at 2 to 3 business days. Turnaround estimates across the whole industry moved repeatedly through 2026, so treat any figure as indicative.
Do I need a membership to submit to SGC?
No, per current reporting — SGC's service levels are available without a paid membership. That contrasts with PSA, which made its cheapest tiers exclusive to Collectors Club members at a reported $149 a year.
