The short answer
Topps Chrome Football, and treat transition-year pricing as unsettled
Panini's NFL exclusive ended on 31 March 2026 and Topps took over from April, with 2025 Topps Chrome Football as the first release under the agreement. Chrome in the hobby configuration is the product to buy. Price history under the new license is short, so be more cautious than usual about paying up.
Football is in the middle of the largest change in its card market in over a decade. Panini's long run as the exclusive NFL card maker ended on 31 March 2026, and Fanatics, through Topps, took over from April 2026 — with 2025 Topps Chrome Football named as the first release under the new agreement, available from mid-April.

1. Best overall
Topps Chrome Football Hobby Box
Topps · The balanced football rip
The first fully licensed NFL release under the Topps agreement that began in April 2026. Chrome's structure is familiar from baseball and basketball: one headline hit, a deep parallel rainbow.
Why it takes this slot: The first fully licensed NFL Chrome under the Topps agreement, with the parallel structure proven in Topps' other sports.
- Context
- First release under the Topps NFL license, from April 2026
- Format
- Chrome base set, parallels, inserts and autographs
- Configuration
- Hobby is the balanced format
What it does well
- The licensed NFL Chrome product collectors had been waiting for
- Parallel structure is proven in Topps' other sports
Where it falls short
- Early releases under a new license price unpredictably
- Chrome edges and surfaces are grading-sensitive
#ad We link to the listing rather than printing a price that would be wrong next week. How we are funded
2. If you want the proven version of the format
Topps Chrome Basketball Hobby Box
Topps · The balanced basketball rip
Topps' first Chrome basketball under the new NBA license, and the configuration to buy if you want one autograph plus a parallel rainbow rather than a pile of hits.
Why it takes this slot: Chrome Basketball shows what the Chrome structure delivers under the same licensor, with a published per-box autograph.
- Configuration
- Hobby — one autograph per box per the manufacturer
- Also sold as
- Jumbo, Value, Mega and Hanger
- Chase
- Color parallels from Magenta to Red, SuperFractors, FrozenFractors
What it does well
- A published per-box autograph, so the floor is knowable
- Hobby is the balanced format — Jumbo maximizes hits, Mega maximizes volume
- First Chrome basketball under the Topps license, which carries its own interest
Where it falls short
- A new license means limited secondary-market history to judge against
- One autograph per box means the parallels carry the value

3. The lower-variance alternative
Topps Series 1 Baseball Hobby Box
Topps · Set building and rookie cards
The flagship paper set. You rip Series 1 for the base set and the rookie-card run, not for a single hit, and that makes it the most honest first hobby box.
Why it takes this slot: If a transition year makes you cautious, a flagship paper set in another sport is the low-variance way to keep ripping.
- Format
- Flagship paper base set with inserts and autographs
- Purpose
- Set building, rookie card runs
- Release
- Annual, early in the baseball calendar
What it does well
- A complete-able base set, which almost nothing else offers
- The lowest-variance hobby box in baseball
- Paper stock grades more predictably than chrome
Where it falls short
- The chase cards are not in this product
- Base-set value depends on completing it

What changes for a buyer
- The licensed product is a Topps product. Fully licensed NFL cards now carry Topps branding rather than Panini's.
- Panini's current NFL output is not fully licensed. It still exists; it is a different asset with a different market.
- The design language resets. Chrome's parallel structure, familiar from baseball and basketball, is now the football structure too.
- Price history is short. A first release under a new license has no multi-year comparable. Pricing is unsettled in both directions.
How to buy into a transition year
Cautiously, and for reasons other than speculation. The collectors who do well out of a license transition are generally the ones buying cards they want for their own sake, not the ones trying to guess which first-release product becomes significant. If you are buying a box because you enjoy ripping it and you like the players, the transition is irrelevant to you. If you are buying because you think it will appreciate, you are making a bet on an unsettled market.
