The short answer
Topps, because it holds the MLB, NBA and NFL licenses — and Bowman for prospects
This question used to have a genuine answer per sport. It no longer does. Fanatics-owned Topps holds the exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses — NBA from the 2025-26 season, NFL from April 2026. For those three sports the licensed card is a Topps or Bowman card, and an unlicensed alternative is a different and thinner asset. The real question is which Topps LINE suits you, and that is what this page answers.
If you are asking which sports card brand to buy, the 2026 answer is Topps for baseball, basketball and football, and Bowman — a Topps brand — for prospects. That is not brand loyalty. Fanatics-owned Topps holds the exclusive trading card licenses for all three leagues, so for those sports the licensed card and the Topps card are the same thing.
That consolidation happened recently and it has invalidated most of what is written about card brands online. Topps became the exclusive NBA licensee from the 2025-26 season, and the exclusive NFL licensee from April 2026, ending Panini's long run as the NFL card maker. Any list that still names Panini Prizm as the football product to buy was written before that change.
Why the license is the whole answer
A licensed card carries the team names, logos and uniforms. An unlicensed card of the same player cannot, and the market prices that difference heavily. When a rookie breaks out, the card that gets submitted for grading, listed, tracked and resold is the licensed rookie card from the exclusive maker. Everything else is a secondary market with fewer buyers.
So the brand question is really a licensing question, and then a product-line question. Once you know Topps holds the license, the useful decision is which of its lines you are buying into — because Chrome, flagship, Heritage, Finest and Bowman behave like entirely different products despite sharing a parent.
Who holds what in 2026
| Brand | Owner | Position in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Topps | Fanatics | Exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses |
| Bowman | Fanatics (Topps brand) | The prospect brand — first Bowman and Bowman Chrome autographs |
| Panini | Panini | Lost the NFL exclusive in April 2026 and the NBA licence from 2025-26 |
| Upper Deck | Upper Deck | Holds the NHL licence; not a factor in MLB, NBA or NFL cards |
Licensing positions are sourced at the foot of this page. Confirm current licence status before buying on the strength of it.

1. Best Topps Chrome line
Topps Chrome Baseball Hobby Box
Topps · The balanced baseball rip
Chrome is the line the baseball hobby organizes itself around: refractor parallels that collectors chase, rookies that hold value, and a hobby configuration built to balance autographs against parallels.
Why it takes this slot: The chrome stock and refractor parallel ladder that defines the modern hobby, and the most liquid secondary market of any line here.
- Configuration
- Hobby, with autograph content and hobby-exclusive inserts
- Also sold as
- Jumbo, Value, Delight and Mega formats
- Chase
- Refractor parallel rainbow, numbered color parallels, SuperFractors
What it does well
- The deepest parallel structure in baseball, which is what sustains secondary demand
- Hobby configuration is the balanced one — Jumbo trades parallels for hits
- Rookie cards from this line are the ones graders see most
Where it falls short
- Popularity means box prices move with the release calendar
- Chrome surfaces show print lines, which costs grades

2. Best Topps flagship line
Topps Series 1 Baseball Hobby Box
Topps · Set building and rookie cards
The flagship paper set. You rip Series 1 for the base set and the rookie-card run, not for a single hit, and that makes it the most honest first hobby box.
Why it takes this slot: The paper base set the sport is catalogued by. If you want the card a player is identified with, flagship is where it lives.
- Format
- Flagship paper base set with inserts and autographs
- Purpose
- Set building, rookie card runs
- Release
- Annual, early in the baseball calendar
What it does well
- A complete-able base set, which almost nothing else offers
- The lowest-variance hobby box in baseball
- Paper stock grades more predictably than chrome
Where it falls short
- The chase cards are not in this product
- Base-set value depends on completing it

3. Best Bowman line
Bowman Chrome Baseball Hobby Box
Bowman · Prospecting
Prospect cards, not major-league cards. Bowman Chrome is a bet on who a player becomes, which is the highest-variance way to spend a box budget.
Why it takes this slot: Bowman is the prospect brand, and first Bowman Chrome autographs are the asset class it exists to produce. High ceiling, low floor.
- Focus
- First Bowman Chrome prospect cards and autographs
- Chase
- Chrome prospect autographs and color parallels
- Release
- Annual
What it does well
- The only place first prospect autographs come from
- A single correct prospect can outrun several boxes
Where it falls short
- Most prospects never make it, and those cards go to nothing
- The highest-variance product in this guide
#ad We link to the listing rather than printing a price that would be wrong next week. How we are funded
4. Best Topps Heritage line
Topps Heritage Baseball Hobby Box
Topps · Collectors who like a set, not a lottery
Current players on vintage designs. Heritage is bought by people who intend to build the set and keep it, which makes it the calmest box on this list.
Why it takes this slot: A vintage-design reissue with a finishable checklist, for collectors who want a set rather than a parallel chase.
- Format
- Retro-design base set with short prints and autographs
- Purpose
- Set building
- Release
- Annual
What it does well
- A genuinely collectible set rather than a hit chase
- Short prints give the set real structure
Where it falls short
- Rough-cut retro stock is unkind to grades
- Modest ceiling per box
#ad We link to the listing rather than printing a price that would be wrong next week. How we are funded
5. Best Topps Finest line
Topps Finest Baseball Hobby Box
Topps · A higher-end chrome rip
A smaller, higher-end chrome product with autographs built into the configuration. Fewer cards, higher average card, same chrome grading caveats.
Why it takes this slot: A smaller, higher-end chrome product. Fewer cards, higher average card, and a tighter autograph checklist.
- Format
- High-end chrome with autograph content
- Box size
- Fewer packs than a flagship hobby box
- Chase
- Refractor parallels and autographs
What it does well
- Higher average card value than a flagship box
- Published autograph content
Where it falls short
- Fewer cards per box
- Price per box moves sharply around release

The Topps lines, and what each one is for
Flagship — sold as Topps Series 1, Series 2 and Update — is the paper base set the sport is catalogued by. It is the biggest checklist, the cheapest per card, and the line that produces the card a player is identified with for the rest of their career. Buy it to build sets and to own the standard rookie card.
Chrome is flagship's design on chromium stock with a parallel ladder on top — refractors in a hierarchy of colours and print runs, up to one-of-one SuperFractors. It is the most liquid line on the secondary market and the one most people mean when they talk about modern cards. Our box-level comparison of the formats is in best hobby boxes.
Heritage reissues a historic Topps design with current players. The appeal is a finishable set with a knowable checklist, and it attracts collectors who find the parallel chase tedious. Finest is a smaller, higher-end chrome product: fewer cards per box, higher average card, tighter autograph checklist.
Bowman is the prospect brand and behaves differently from all of them. Its cards are of players who have not yet reached the majors, and its value sits in first Bowman Chrome autographs. The ceiling is the highest in the hobby and the floor is close to nothing, because most prospects do not make it. Treat it as a separate asset class rather than another Topps line.
Does the brand change how you store and grade it
Not materially — a card is a card at the supplies level, and a Topps Chrome rookie goes into the same 35pt holder as anything else. The one real difference is chrome stock: chromium cards show surface scratches and print lines more readily than paper, and they are more prone to visible edge chipping. That matters at grading time, where surface is one of the four assessed criteria.
If you are buying chrome products with grading in mind, pre-screen with a loupe before you pay a fee — the tools for that are in best card centering tools, and what the grade labels actually mean is in the PSA grading scale explained. Which cards justify the fee at all is covered in what cards are worth grading.
What to buy first
- Want the standard rookie card of a player: Topps flagship, in the player's rookie year.
- Want the card with the deepest resale market: Topps Chrome.
- Want to complete something: Topps Heritage, or flagship if you want the bigger set.
- Want the highest ceiling and accept a near-zero floor: Bowman Chrome.
- Buying NFL or NBA: Topps Chrome in that sport, because those are the licensed cards now.
If this is your first purchase in any of these lines, start with best hobby boxes for beginners rather than buying on brand reputation alone. For what to look for inside a given box, see what to look for in a hobby box, and for release timing see the sports card release calendar.
